What Is a Climatic Chamber?

Updated: 4 days ago
A climatic chamber is an enclosed cabinet designed to maintain controlled temperature and humidity over a specified period. It allows products to be stored under defined environmental conditions for testing, helping laboratories evaluate product stability and quality over time.
What Is a Climatic Chamber Used For?
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, climatic chambers are commonly used for stability testing. These studies evaluate how a drug product's quality changes under specified environmental conditions, helping manufacturers establish or confirm its shelf life and recommended storage conditions.
Climatic chambers are also used in other industries, including cosmetics and food, where controlled environmental testing can support product stability and shelf-life studies.

Why Does It Matter in Indonesia?
Temperature and humidity are important considerations when evaluating pharmaceutical products for tropical markets. The ASEAN Guideline on Stability Study of Drug Product identifies 30°C / 75% relative humidity (RH) as the general long-term stability-testing condition for the ASEAN region, also known as Climatic Zone IVb.
Two commonly referenced pharmaceutical stability-testing conditions are:
Long-term (ASEAN): 30°C / 75% RH
Accelerated: 40°C / 75% RH
The appropriate testing conditions and study duration depend on the product and applicable regulatory requirements. A climatic chamber helps maintain the environmental conditions specified by the study protocol.
What Should You Look for in a Climatic Chamber?
Beyond temperature and humidity control, important considerations include environmental uniformity throughout the chamber, monitoring and alarm functions, and data-recording capabilities.
These features help laboratories maintain suitable testing conditions and document environmental performance. Equipment selection should also consider chamber capacity, operating ranges, and the laboratory's specific testing requirements.
